Photios’ assessment of the Hypotyposeis, unlike Clement’s other works, was highly critical and negative. He stressed a number of exegetical and theological errors that he perceived in the work, stating that only some Scriptural passages seemed to be commented on in “a correct way” (ὀρθῶς δοκεῖ λέγειν), while others were given “blasphemous and mythological interpretations” (εἰς ἀσεβεῖς καὶ μυθώδεις λόγους ἐκφέρεται). 53 ‘Blasphemy’ was one of Photios’ favourite words in relation to Clement’s views.
