It is the nature of the mind to construct general propositions on the basis of our knowledge [la connaissance/ cognitione] of particular ones. " However, the contrast need not be taken as a contrast between a form of awareness that is not knowledge and one that is, for Descartes goes on to say that our perception of first principles is due to (propositional) intuition, and intuition in the Cartesian system yields something much stronger than just belief or perceptual awareness —it yields something possessing a foundational role in the development of the system of knowledge Descartes called 20 CARTESIAN TRUTH scientia.

It is not clear from this passage by itself that what is "most manifest" is the object of intuition, but this is suggested by the previous sentence: When I considered something very simple and easy about things arithmetical or geometrical such as that two and three added together were five, or similar things, did I not then intuit [intuerbar] at least these things perspicuously enough that I might affirm that they are true. (AT VII, 36; Heffernan, 121) What exactly is it that God's power makes possible?

So, if this text can be relied upon, Descartes does provide a basis for linking nonpropositional clear and distinct perception to the assertion of propositions. And this is what we are looking for. Unfortunately, Descartes does not offer an account here of how this principle is to be justified, nor how it may be connected to the official doctrine of intuition and deduction. However, if, primed with this suggestion, we now return toRules for the Direction of the Mind I believe that a theoretical treatment of the link between nonpropositonal and propositional awareness can be extracted from central texts dealing with intuition and deduction.
