C A S E S T U DY Yasmin is 25 and she is extremely paranoid as well as having moderate learning disabilities. Her social worker has not had very much experience of working with service-users who have mental health problems and from the moment Sacha met Yasmin she found it hard not to stare at Yasmin’s ‘haunted’ expression. Sacha was not looking forward to working with Yasmin and after briefly shaking hands with Yasmin she folded her arms and held a rigid posture. Although Sacha found it easy to talk at Yasmin, possibly a result of nerves, her NVC did not communicate a relaxed message.
An excellent example of the use of positive NVC appears in the ITV drama Lost for Words. One of the support workers working with older service-users is particularly aware of the difficulties that her service-users have with verbal communication. This means that the support worker uses open body language and gestures, positive facial expressions and appropriate eye contact to provide as non-threatening a message as possible to her older service-users. By way of a contrast, the next case study reveals the difficulties that appear within the social work relationship if NVC is not used effectively.
In other words, an attitude is a thought in the mind that is influenced by emotions and behavioural experiences. This point can be exemplified by analysing any attitude we may have. If we have a favourable attitude towards a person the argument runs that this thought is present within the mind because of the interplay between emotional responses and behavioural experiences. We like the person because we have had positive behavioural interaction with them and this influences our emotional response towards the individual.
