The same pattern applies to a great many everyday situations: the number of industrial accidents per year; the number of customers entering a shop each hour; the number of telephone calls taken by a receptionist per hour; or the number of new comets discovered each year. The Poisson distribution also helps us to understand serendipity. We suppose that a rare event should happen with a certain, low frequency.
