However, the idea of objects is much more general than that—it is natural, it is even built into language. In fact, it can apply to almost everything. We use nouns to identify objects. We use adjectives and verbs to express their attributes and their actions. Objects can be anything. The first kind of object that pops into your head is likely to be something solid, like a basketball or a tennis racquet, or a car. But, as we have seen, objects can also be abstract things such as lines of computer code or data structures.
One reason for this is the serendipity effect. There are lots of potential interfaces between disciplines, so it is only to be expected that some of them will give rise to important discoveries. For example, in later chapters we will see that both biotechnology and environmental management depend heavily on information technology. For many years, and in many institutions, people have struggled with research that crossed disciplines. The field of complexity, for example, was long ignored because it cut across so many disciplines.
Of course the Poisson distribution governs more than deaths at the hooves of cavalry horses. The same pattern applies to a great many everyday situations: the number of industrial accidents per year; the number of customers entering a shop each hour; the number of telephone calls taken by a receptionist per hour; or the number of new comets discovered each year. The Poisson distribution also helps us to understand serendipity. We suppose that a rare event should happen with a certain, low frequency.
