Even when the GPS shows the position to be safe, an adequate depth of water showing under the keel on the sounder is the important confirmation that you need. When navigating, an independent check is always important and this is one of the most useful roles of the sounder. In order to use the sounder readings in a meaningful way you need to study the chart carefully, not only at the expected landfall point but also for a distance to either side of it. When the depth drops away quickly from the coastline you will get less warning that you are approaching and a sudden shoaling on the sounder could mean that you are virtually on top it.
9 ADDING UP THE CLUES With visual navigation, you are never likely to be 100% sure of your position unless you are close to a buoy or other fixed marker. However, total accuracy does not matter in most situations and knowing your position within half a mile or so will often suffice even when you are navigating along a coastline. Sometimes it can be just as important to know where you are not as to know where you are. And there are many clues out there that can help you. On its own, each clue might not seem too important, but when you add them together you can get a good impression of whether you are on track or moving into danger.
Rather than following a direct line between departure and arrival points, offset the course by around 5°. It doesn’t particularly matter which way you build in this offset, provided the new course does not take you close to any dangers. On a sailboat you will also need to consider the direction of the wind and tide when deciding on the offset because you don’t want to end up having to fight one or other at the end of the passage in order to get to your destination. The point is that you know you won’t arrive at your chosen destination but you will definitely arrive to one side of it.
